Outdoor Learning Benefits for Schools

Enhancing Education Through Outdoor Learning Spaces

In today’s evolving educational landscape, outdoor learning spaces are gaining significant traction. Schools are increasingly recognising the myriad benefits these environments offer, not just for academic purposes but also for the overall well-being of students. Outdoor learning environments present unique opportunities to enhance learning experiences, foster creativity and connect students with nature.

Let's explore the benefits of outdoor learning spaces, the essential elements they should feature and how Valley Projects can help you create the perfect outdoor learning environment.

The Benefits of Outdoor Learning Spaces

Imagine a classroom without walls, where fresh air invigorates the mind and natural surroundings stimulate curiosity. The mental health benefits are substantial. Being outdoors can clear students' minds, reduce stress and enhance their mood, leading to better focus and productivity.

Studies suggest that students retain information better when they learn outside, where an engaging environment helps reinforce concepts and makes learning more enjoyable and memorable.

  • One of the most significant projects, the Natural Connections Demonstration Project, involved over 40,000 pupils and provided substantial evidence of the benefits of outdoor learning. The findings showed that 92% of teachers observed increased engagement from pupils when learning outdoors, and 85% reported positive behavioural impacts. Moreover, 95% of children stated that outdoor lessons were more enjoyable, with 90% feeling happier and healthier as a result 1, 2.

  • The Learning through Landscapes initiative also emphasises the benefits of outdoor learning. According to their research, outdoor activities can improve mental health, reduce stress, and enhance children's connection to nature. The study found that spending time in natural environments can combat issues like Nature Deficit Disorder 3, which is linked to behavioural problems and decreased well-being 2.

  • Additionally, outdoor learning has been shown to foster inclusivity and social development. The flexibility of outdoor settings allows for diverse learning styles and can be particularly beneficial for children with special educational needs. Teachers also report improved job satisfaction and teaching practices when incorporating outdoor learning into their curriculum 1, 2.

Furthermore, outdoor learning spaces encourage physical activity. Whether it’s a primary school with a forest school setup or a secondary school with sports and recreational areas, these spaces promote healthier lifestyles. Integrating natural elements into the learning environment helps students develop a deeper appreciation for nature, fostering environmental stewardship and a sense of responsibility towards the planet. Additionally, outdoor spaces are versatile, serving various purposes such as breakout sessions, lunchtime activities and even as alternative classroom settings during favourable weather.

Essential Elements of an Outdoor Learning Space

Surfacing

Creating an effective outdoor learning space requires careful planning and consideration. Depending on the activities planned, different types of surfaces such as resin-bound, rubber mulch, decking or artificial grass can be used. These surfaces ensure safety and comfort while being functional for various educational activities.

Structure

Structures like timber outdoor classrooms or canvas shades allow outdoor learning to continue even during less favourable weather. These areas can also be equipped with necessary facilities such as power outlets for laptops.

Seating

Comfortable seating and shaded areas are crucial for effective use of the space. Options range from picnic benches to more sophisticated canopy-style structures, ensuring that students and teachers can use the space effectively regardless of the weather.

Sensory

Sensory gardens and planting areas connect students with nature and can be used for educational purposes, such as teaching about ecosystems, biology and sustainability.

Nature

Integrating nature is key. Elements such as wildflower areas, bird boxes, insect hotels, and herb gardens enrich the outdoor space, making it a haven for biodiversity and a practical resource for educational projects.

Accessibility

Ensuring that outdoor learning spaces are accessible to all students, including those with disabilities, is crucial. Additionally, safety considerations such as non-slip surfaces and finger-trap prevention must be addressed.

What To Consider When Planning A Project

Are you wondering what is involved in the design, planning and implementation of a successful project?

You’re not alone!

We have pulled a clip from an interveiw we had a couple of years ago with Simon Watkins, Head at Ludlow Junior School, to give you a few brief tips from his perspective of what to consider before your next project.

This was shot shortly after we completed the design and implementation of the playground design and landscaping project, working with the staff at Ludlow Juniors to deliver a fantastic result for the school!

We've updated our branding! Valley Landscapes is now Valley Projects

It was time for a change.

It was 40 years ago when we started creating landscaped spaces. A lot has changed since then, but our values remain unchanged.

This year we’ve decided to refresh our branding to reflect the company that we have grown to be.

Over the years we have been know as Valley Landscapes and Valley Landscape Projects. We have simplified this to Valley Projects.
