The Raleigh School Artificial Grass & Playground

Transforming Outdoor Spaces: A Safer, More Engaging Playground

The play area at Raleigh School, originally reclaimed from scrub woodland, had fallen into disrepair and become unsafe. The play equipment was aged and no longer fit for use, while the bark surfacing was decaying and gave limited fall protection. Exposed tree roots and uneven levels between the play area and the tarmac playground created trip hazards, and poorly placed timber buildings used for storage were a waste of valuable space and had become a dumping ground for rubbish.

A Perfect Opportunity for Transformation

Realising a complete overhaul was required, the school partnered with us to redesign the space from a blank canvas. We consulted staff and the leadership team to develop a comprehensive plan for an all-weather area that would be safe, functional and inviting.

The Transformation Process

Enhanced Surfacing:

We began by laying a grano base over most of the area, to provide a stable foundation with good drainage for artificial grass. This would ensure that the play area could continue to be used throughout the seasons.

New Play Equipment:

To encourage active play and exploration, we combined new play equipment with trail features in a cohesive, imaginative design.

Tree Management:

We removed the large tree which had been causing trip hazards with its root system and before replacing it with a tree of a similar variety, we installed a root barrier system to prevent future damage to the play surface.

Upgraded Early Years Area:

The Early Years Area also needed upgrading, and we included this within the refurbishment.

The school wanted this to be accessible around the year, so we fully resurfaced it, and installed sufficient drainage to prevent flooding.

We designed and installed a new solid-boarded boundary fence that would also function as an activity board to promote interactive play.
